Rick has just returned from the CSUN conference in Los Angeles. He spent a great day seeing all the new low vision products available. Most of the products were forms of electronic magnification. He did meet the presidents of Magnisight, Telesensory and Optelec, which are products that he carries in the stores. The president of Telesensory was especially interested in Rick’s feedback about a new CCTV in the making. Another company just getting starting in the low vision field is making a portable electronic magnifier which will magnify up to 20X and can be mounted on a pole for seated viewing! This engineer also appreciated some of Rick’s comments. It seems like many of the manufacturers making low vision products are sighted and appreciate the feedback of someone who is a potential user.
Rick did purchase a new product from the show – the Talking Pen! This pen is a small scanner the size of a highlighting pen which will scan a line of text and read it back. It can be hooked up to computer speakers or an included headphone.
We also are testing a talking blood glucose meter for those visually impaired people who are diabetic. We should have the results next week on how easy it is to use.
